Sailing Expedition from Lisbon to Horta – A Legendary Atlantic Passage

Embark on an iconic ocean voyage from Lisbon to Horta, Faial, aboard a Hallberg Rassy 382, a world-class bluewater cruiser built for offshore adventures. This crossing follows the path of legendary sailors, bringing you to one of the most historic and essential ports in transatlantic sailing—Horta, the beating heart of the Azores for mariners.

A Journey Across the Atlantic

Departing from Lisbon, the city of explorers, we leave behind a coastline rich in maritime history. The Tagus River flows behind us as we set our course westward into the vast Atlantic, a highway for sailors venturing between continents.

This passage is a true ocean experience, where we embrace the elements, fine-tune our seamanship, and navigate through the ever-changing moods of the open sea. The Atlantic offers a dynamic challenge, with steady trade winds, rolling swells, and the occasional test of weather systems—an ideal journey for those seeking adventure and discovery.

Life at Sea

Each day on board is a blend of rhythm, learning, and awe-inspiring natural beauty:

⛵ Sailing and Seamanship – Fine-tuning sails, optimizing course, and embracing the fundamentals of long-distance offshore sailing.
šŸŒ… Sunrises and Sunsets – Experience the Atlantic sky painted in breathtaking hues, untouched by city lights.
✨ Starry Nights – The open ocean transforms into a celestial wonder, with the Milky Way stretching above and bioluminescence glowing in our wake.
šŸ‹ Wildlife Encounters – Expect visits from dolphins, whales, and seabirds as we sail through their vast blue world.

The Arrival – Horta, The Sailor’s Haven

After 8 days at sea, the lush volcanic peaks of Faial Island rise from the horizon, signaling our arrival in Horta, one of the most famous stopovers for sailors crossing the Atlantic.

Horta is more than just a port—it’s a maritime legend. Every sailor passing through the Atlantic knows of Peter CafĆ© Sport, the historic meeting point where ocean voyagers share tales of their crossings over a cold gin and tonic. The marina itself is a living canvas, covered in painted murals left behind by generations of sailors—a tradition that brings luck to those continuing their journeys.

Beyond its rich sailing heritage, Faial offers volcanic landscapes, lush trails, and the dramatic Caldeira crater, making it an unforgettable destination both on and off the water.

A Voyage That Defines Sailors

This crossing is more than just a passage—it’s an initiation into the world of offshore sailing. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or an adventurer drawn to the sea, this journey will test your skills, deepen your love for the ocean, and place you among the many mariners who have made Horta a legend.
